Why Solid Rock is on the Web

Last weekend, I received the email below.  The climber found the Solid Rock via a “banner ad” found on www.rockclimbing.com. As you read the questions, think through how you would answer them.  If you would like to see my answers, visit http://www.srcfc.org/resources/answers.htm!

Dear Mr. Landrus

I recently stumbled on to your website.  I have a decent background in various religious ideas, but would not say that I subscribe to any one religion.  I found your website while I was looking for climbing resources.  I have a few questions about the specific beliefs of your organization.

1. do you take the bible literally (creationism etc.)?

2. Do you believe that Christianity is the only religion that contains truth or do believe that there is truth contained in other beliefs and religions?

3. do believe that you must be Christian in order to be "saved"?

4. what do you believe is the difference between various Christian sects (i.e. catholic, Lutheran, Baptist)?

5. why do you believe that Christianity is an important part of climbing?

6. Why do you feel that it is important to recruit more people to Christianity?

thanks for your time

Joshua Tree Gathering, November 7-9, 2003

By Josh Richardson

Early Friday night, Mark Allen, Roy Miller Jr., Dean Mueller and Josh Richardson and his spunky daughter made it out before the traffic. We introduced ourselves and enjoyed a great campfire.

Roy and Dean shared that they had seen Solid Rock’s advertisement in “Climbing” and from the information on the website contacted, Mark Allen, the Area Contact, about the weekend.

In addition, we found out that another attendee of the week came out because of the ad.  Let’s thank the Lord for directing their eyes and theirs heart to this resource.

For those who don't know, many of the southern California freeways have two speeds: 95 mph and 5 mph.  Due to the second speed, John Blaubach and his friend from Hungary, Csaba Bokza, arrived after the campfire.  Another group, wanting to travel at the first speed, arrived well into the night: Lacey Boyer, Kara Black, and William Klein.

On Saturday morning, Russell Green, Debra, and John Maynard arrived. We had a worship set led by Andy of Calvary Chapel, Joshua Springs; he was indeed quite talented, a true blessing for us from the Lord. After Mark shared a devotional, we set out to do “on mission climbing” at several areas: Thin Wall, Saddle Rocks and Intersection Rocks.  We did not pass out drinks this time as the weather was predicted to be too cold.

Sunday morning we had a great worship set and a message from Mark, inspiring us to make each day count and witness to others by building a relationship and listening to find out their needs.

The weekend was a success as more people in this area are getting connected and excited about seeing the Lord work through rock climbers to reach out to those in need.  Nuts and bolts may save a roll, but Jesus Christ will save your soul!

Bishop, CA Area Event

November 28-30, 2003

All Solid Rockers on the West Coast are invited to the Bishop, CA area for an Outreach Event.  We will gather the day after Thanksgiving*, Friday, November 28th.

For this event, we will be partnering with a local, non-traditional church whose focus is to reach the recreational community in the Bishop area.  As Solid Rockers, we will be climbing/bouldering together at one of three locations: The Happys, Buttermilks or Owens River Gorge.

While climbing together, we will be inviting those around us to a dinner, (we as Solid Rockers will cover the cost of the meal), and presentation at their Coffee-House & Discovery Center (621 W. Line St., Suite 110) in Bishop.  The event will happen Saturday, November 29th, at 6:00 pm.  After dinner, Calvin will be presenting pictures of his trip up The Nose on El Captain in Yosemite, giving 10 Tips for Climbing Big Walls and sharing his life story.

On Sunday, we will gather again for a short prayer/worship service at 8:00 am and if you have time, go climbing!

Out contact is Pastor Mark Disbrow and you can find out more about him and the ministry we are partnering with at www.thesourceis.org.  Pastor Mark has offered to help us find housing and/or camping in the area.   Please RSVP soon, by November 23rd, so plans can be made.

*PLEASE NOTE: The Landrus family will be arriving on Tuesday night in the Bishop area.  We will be doing some “kids” climbing days on Wednesday and Thursday.  Consider arriving early as well.
