Red Rock Rendezvous Review

Psalms 33:10-11 says, “The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.”  An amusing way to say those verses is Want to know how to make God laugh? Tell Him your plans!”

How the Red Rock Rendezvous came together was a “God thing.”  I had been trying to get Solid Rock on the RRR agenda in many ways.  But as I registered in early January, I had no specific opportunity.

Last fall, I had offered the event organizers some of our endorsers as instructors. The offer was not accepted.  However, God still orchestrated the entire situation and made some music of it..  Jeremey Collins, chief illustrator for Rock and Ice, was assigned to be a rep for his company and offered to do live painting for the event.  As he created art in front of a rain-drenched but enthusiastic crowd of climbers, God’s plan became evident.  Out of the blue, another SRCFC endorser, Kitty Calhoun, suddenly appeared on the event’s list of instructors.  As I got to know her in person, God’s plan was evident.

The notes of God’s plan continued to play out in many ways: Another Solid Rocker, Grant Walker of Alaska, did a CORE strength training seminar; Harold and I were asked at the last minute to be volunteers as campground hosts; Anne, Joelene and Brandon were able to volunteer at the event; We encouraged a new member from New Mexico; I met several Solid Rockers from the Las Vegas area; And we had a wonderful worship service in Calico Basin.

The piece reached its pinnacle on Monday morning when we were breaking camp.  One of the participants arrived with a closed attitude toward us as Christian climbing, campground hosts.  As the weekend progressed, several of us fought through his outer shells and began to develop a relationship with him. During our parting conversation, he willingly received a “Tobin Tract.”  Please pray that he responses to the message.   I do thank God for putting together a great piece of music!

Top Ten Action Items 2005

As a different way to review Solid Rock’s purpose, I would like to suggest a list of the Top Ten Action Items we can take on in order to grow in our purpose.   Remember, SRCFC exists to encourage, equip, and empower climbers to reach other climbers for Christ through personal witness and group outreach.   The Action Items #8, #7 & #6 are described in this update (#10 and #9 are described in Email Update #108 – will be posted soon).

q        q        10. Climb with a Solid Rocker

q        q        9. Use the Partner’s Directory

q        q        8. Invite a Christian climbing friend to join Solid Rock

Although I believe Solid Rock – Climbers for Christ should exist, I believe it doesn’t need to exist for the mission of Solid Rock to happen.  As Christian climbers, we should feel compelled by the love of God (2 Corinthians 5:14) to share the Good News with our unsaved climbing partners.  I did that for fourteen years before SRCFC existed.  However, the value that Solid Rock adds to your efforts to reach-out and the value you add to Solid Rock’s efforts multiplies the influence we can have on climbers.  Many of you know other Christian climbers who are not members of Solid Rock.  Take a moment to invite your climbing buddies to become members.  Email them this link to http://www.srcfc.org/default1.asp to get them started in learning about SRCFC.

q        q        7. Become an Annual Donor, then a Grade VI Giver

From the parable of the “Sower and the Seed,” several concepts can be gleaned: The seed is the Word of God, the sower is a follower of Christ and seed is scattered among people with varying receptivity to the Word of God.  One thought that is left out is “Who provides the seed?”   We can’t sow seed we don’t have!  In other words, we can’t spend money that isn’t given.  God is the provider of the seed.  But He moves through His followers to give for the seed He wants scattered.  Although it’s not a required, it’s crucial that every member of should give something for annual donation (suggested amount $30 – see member incentive and giving instructions at the end of this update ).  Then many of us can be giving beyond that.  For most of us, climbing a route of a Grade VI requires multiple days.  A “Grade VI” Giver is committed to making multiple donations during the course of a year, e.g. a monthly commitment.

q        q        6. Obtain Training and Outreach Resources

One of the great ways Solid Rock can add value to your efforts to reach out is to provide resources and tools that train and equip you to do outreach. At http://www.srcfc.org/resources/tools.asp you can view and order the following resources: Member Handbook, Outreach Business Cards, T-Shirt, Climber's Tracts, Logo Decal, Logo Beanie, The Way Runner, Climbing Community Religious Survey, and Event Planning. To be added soon: Many of the paper resources will be down-loadable as PDF files and printed!

The purpose of the E-mail Update is to communicate teachings, prayer requests, vision, events, and other information about Solid Rock.  If you know any other climber who would like to join in reaching other Climbers for Christ, please have them contact us at srcfc@bendbroadband.com or visit our web site at www.srcfc.org.  To unsubscribe, please reply with “unsubscribe” in the subject line.
