Letter from Gathering Leader: Tim Burling
Hopefully you have all been receiving Calvin Landrus’ Solid Rock Update emails. If so, you may have noticed that there is a Gathering at the Gunks scheduled for the weekend of May 2-4. If not, now you know! First off, I’d like to briefly introduce myself. My name is Tim Burling and I live west of Philadelphia, PA in the smaller town of West Chester. I was raised in a Christian family but didn’t completely give my life to Jesus Christ until about 3 years ago. I attend Covenant Fellowship Church near West Chester. I am currently employed by General Electric in the Information Management Department. I’m finishing up a two year Information Management Leadership Program for GE this August. I began climbing about 4.5 years ago. My climbing teacher/mentor threw me directly into trad climbing. My first climb was at the Delaware Water Gap in northeast PA. I’ve since climbed across the country although I’m still waiting for my first trip to the Yosemite Valley! Trad is my passion at the moment but I enjoy any type of climbing. My climbing levels are around 5.10 second, 5.7 lead although I’d really like to increase that this season! I’d like to get into aid climbing as well this season. I also enjoy mountain biking, hiking, rafting, skiing and pretty much anything outside! I signed up to be the NorthEast Area Contact for SRCFC recently and I’m very excited about bringing Christian climbers together for fellowship and outreach! This has been a prayer of mine ever since I rededicated my life to Christ. The climbing/outdoor sport world does not typically support a life of faith. God willing, SRCFC will be an excellent tool to Encourage and Equip us to bring the Good News of the Gospel to the climbing/outdoor sports world.
Here is what I like to know from you: - High (I’m definitely in!) - Medium (Love to but not sure yet) - Low (Probably not) - Zero (Can’t make it) - Cook (do you enjoy campfire cooking?) - Worship (do you have a musical talent and desire to lead worship?) - Speaker (would you like to give a talk on the Scriptures?) - Instructor (would you like to hold a clinic on the climbing topic of your choice?) I’m headed to the Gunks this weekend to check out some campsites. I don’t have a definite cost yet but I’m thinking it will be between $20-30/person. This will include campsite and Saturday night meal. I will be sending out more info and a true Registration form in the upcoming weeks.
ON MISSION CLIMBING
“On Mission” Climbing is approaching a day of climbing as an opportunity to further
God's Kingdom.
Before and as you go climbing, pray something like this,
When this is prayed, all you are really doing is asking that
the Great Commission happens. Jesus states in Matthew 28, “Go and make disciples.”
Often we think that is only meant for those missionaries who have gone to a foreign land.
But I the word “Go” has the meaning of “as you are going.” For us as Solid Rockers that
is saying, “As you go climbing, look for ways to give witness to Jesus our Lord.”
Being “on mission” will gives you a higher purpose when we go climbing!
